The Role of Play Therapy in Healing
At Juliette’s House, we believe in the power of healing through connection, compassion, and support. Play therapy is one of the many tools child advocacy centers use to help children navigate their emotions, build resilience, and support their overall development—whether or not they’ve experienced trauma.
WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?
Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play as an approach for children to express themselves, work through their feelings, and solve problems. Children often communicate more naturally through play than through verbal conversation. Play therapy provides a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their feelings and thoughts, develop coping strategies, and engage with their emotions in ways that are non-threatening.
HOW PLAY THERAPY SUPPORTS HEALING
For children who have endured trauma, play therapy is an essential tool for fostering healing and recovery. It helps them process difficult experiences at their own pace, under the guidance of a trained therapist. Through play, children can express feelings that are too complex or painful to verbalize, gain understanding over their experiences, and begin to rebuild a sense of safety and control.
Even for children who have not experienced trauma, play therapy offers significant benefits. It nurtures emotional intelligence, encourages healthy social development, and strengthens problem-solving skills. Play therapy also promotes creativity and cognitive growth, allowing children to practice self-regulation and build healthy relationships.
